The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest compressor. Compressor capacity ratings are typically generated under AHRI Standard 540, which defines the test conditions. But the condensing unit's performance still depends on the evaporator, the expansion valve, and the piping. The spec sheet gives you the boundary. The system design gives you the answer.
Here's what I check before approving any unit:
- Evaporating temperature range and desired TD
- Condensing temperature and design ambient
- Refrigerant, voltage, and phase
- Subcooling and superheat requirements from Copeland's data sheet
- Defrost method and whether it matches the application
Here's the thing: almost all of this is public information. The failure is not a lack of data. It's a lack of asking.
The total cost of ownership trap
I'm not going to say the cheapest quote is always the worst. That's as lazy as saying it's always the best. What my Q1 audits show is that the sticker price is the smallest part of the story. When I say no
I want to be honest about the boundaries. A remanufactured Copeland compressor is not the right call if:
- The application is critical and downtime costs more than the price difference.

- The load is at the edge of the compressor's design envelope. That's not where you want uncertainty.
