Documented project outcomes from actual CopelandTech compressor installations.
A 120,000 sq ft multi-temperature distribution center serving regional grocery chains replaced its aging R-22 reciprocating rack system with CopelandTech semi-hermetic compressors operating on R-448A. The facility operates three temperature zones: +2°C (dairy/produce), -18°C (frozen goods), and -25°C (ice cream/seafood). Our engineering team provided compressor selection for each zone based on actual load calculations from 12 months of historical energy data. Post-installation monitoring over the first operating year documented 19% reduction in compressor energy consumption compared to the previous system, while maintaining all three zones within ±1°C of setpoint. The project also eliminated 340 kg of R-22 refrigerant charge from the facility's environmental footprint.
A pharmaceutical contract manufacturer required precise chilled water supply at 7°C ±0.3°C for active pharmaceutical ingredient crystallization reactors across four production suites. The existing chiller system used fixed-speed compressors that cycled frequently, causing temperature swings of ±1.5°C that impacted crystal quality. CopelandTech supplied inverter-driven scroll compressors with VFD modulation from 25% to 100% capacity, integrated into a new chilled water loop with variable primary flow. After commissioning, the system maintained ±0.3°C stability across all four suites simultaneously. The pharmaceutical manufacturer reported a 12% improvement in first-pass crystallization yield attributed to the tighter temperature control, validated by their internal quality assurance team over a six-month qualification period.
Choosing the right compressor type depends on capacity range, temperature requirements, serviceability needs, and cost structure. No single architecture is optimal for all applications.
| Selection Factor | Scroll | Semi-Hermetic Reciprocating | Open-Drive Reciprocating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity Range | 2-40 HP | 5-120 HP | 20-300 HP |
| Evaporating Temperature | -15°C to +15°C | -40°C to +15°C | -50°C to +15°C |
| Field Serviceability | Replace only (sealed unit) | Field-rebuildable (valves, pistons, gaskets) | Fully serviceable (shaft seal, all internals) |
| Vibration Level | Low (orbiting motion) | Medium (reciprocating mass) | High (requires isolation mounts) |
| Sound Level (typical) | 58-68 dB(A) at 1m | 68-78 dB(A) at 1m | 75-85 dB(A) at 1m |
| Relative Cost (per kW cooling) | Baseline | +10-20% | +25-40% |
| Typical Application | Commercial AC, medium-temp refrigeration | Cold storage, food processing, supermarkets | Industrial process, cascade low-temp, ammonia systems |
Note: Scroll compressors are not suitable for applications below -15°C evaporating due to compression ratio limitations. Semi-hermetic units cannot be used with ammonia (R-717) due to copper motor winding incompatibility — open-drive compressors with external motors are required for ammonia service.
